Kob Khun Krub, Bangkok!Thursday May 01, 2008

Bangkok. What more can I say about this city? I bet most of you have been to the city. It's one of busy cities in Southeast Asia. People from worldwide come here for business or pleasure. Sometimes, it's a mix of both. Just like I mentioned about Lao, you can't miss seeing beautiful slim girls in Thailand. If you are blindfolded and you are put in the middle of Bangkok, I bet 99%, chances are you will run into a beautiful slim Thai girl
. Even if you open your eyes, when you turn your head left or right, they're everywhere. White complexion, long straight black hair, nice figure. That sort of thing.

Food? What's to question about the taste of Asia food? Come to Bangkok if you are into spicy seafood. They got fish, squid, crabs, you name it. Choose what kind of places you like, fancy restaurant or just street food stall. English is a foreign language. But chances are people who sell stuff can speak English. At least, they understand English. Tourists are one of source of income to the country. So, I bet if they don't understand English, it is unlikely they will succeed in business.

Just like any other cities in Southeast Asia, Bangkok is tourist-ready. Clear signs can lead you to places you want to go. This is my first time to Bangkok, and already I can find my way to places thanks to clear sign posts. Too bad I can't stay long here. But, even 3 nights can give so memorable impression to me.

The downside of it all maybe, if I have to mention, is the hotel where I stayed. There was no complimentary drink. Yes, the water from the tap is drinkable. But, coming from a country where water from the tap is not drinkable, I cannot drink it even if I know it is drinkable. The hotel claimed to be 4-star hotel, but there was not even water boiler. Most of the TV programmes were in local language except Star Movies. MTV, espn and everyhing were available, but they were my least favorite. And even the Star Movies didn't broadcast exciting movies. Well, at least the last night before my departure, they played Alien.

There were also hilarious things made buy the hotel management. You see, I attended this meeting in the hotel. The management said that the meeting room can only accommodate 3 slots for notebook charger. More than that, participants will be charged BHT500! The Internet, unlike any other busy cities, cost you BHT400 per hour! Funny thing is, there's an Internet cafe just accross the hotel and they charge only BHT20 per 30 minutes; that's BHT40 per hour: 1/10 of that of the hotel! The hotel can arrange taxi for your transport to the airport, but, it will cost you BHT400! Gosh, it's like everything is money, money and money in the hotel. Although this hotel seems to be one of the busiest hotel in town, but with this kind of service, I can only wonder how long they will stay in business. By the way, USD1 equals to approx. BHT30. You figure out all the numbers I have mentioned above.

Unlike Chiang Mai, the city I visited last month, Bangkok seems to be less friendly. I cannot complain, I mean this is the capital city. I know, because I also live in a capitacl city of a country: when there are too many people residing in one city, chances are people become ignorant and negligence with others. When I was in Chiang Mai, some -if not all- the maids I saw would say, "Sawasdeekha" in a very polite manner.

Besides all the attitude, all the hotel's hilarious management, I still find Thailand a beautiful place. I don't dare compare Bangkok with the city where I come from. It is no wonder that tourists feel safe walking around the city: it is clean, everything is in order. The kind of things you'd expect from modern cities. I can only smirk to my government's programme in attracting tourists. They say this is tourist year, but they don't do something about it. Oh, well, time to get back to reality now.
